Should UX designers become generalists or specialists?

There isn’t one correct answer.

Generalists build breadth across UX research, UI, interaction design, product thinking, design systems, and strategy.

Specialists develop deep expertise in areas such as research, accessibility, design systems, UX writing, or AI product design.

The stronger long-term approach may be to become T-shaped — broad enough to understand the wider product ecosystem while developing deep expertise in an area that matters to you.

And as AI takes on more tasks such as UI exploration, research synthesis, prototyping, and design iteration, the question may shift from “Can you design?” to “What can you uniquely think about?”

Your career shouldn’t be a box. It should be an expanding skill tree.
