Stop repeating the apply–wait–refresh cycle. Build a weekly routine that helps you improve your portfolio, practise interviews, learn, and move towards your next opportunity.
Applying for jobs can become an exhausting routine.
You apply, wait, refresh your inbox, hear nothing, and apply again.
But activity isn’t always progress.
A stronger UX job search combines targeted applications with consistent improvement.
Build a better loop
Instead of repeating Apply → Wait → Repeat, build a routine around eight activities.
1. Apply
Focus on relevant roles. Tailor your résumé, select appropriate portfolio work, and be clear about why you’re applying.
2. Improve
Make one meaningful portfolio improvement each week. Strengthen a case study, clarify a design decision, or improve your project storytelling.
3. Network
Start with one meaningful conversation. Learn about someone’s work, ask about their team, and build professional relationships genuinely.
4. Practise
Prepare one interview question, one portfolio story, one design challenge, and one explanation of your design decisions.
5. Learn
Choose one relevant UX concept. Learn it, understand it, and apply it. You don’t need another long course to make every learning session valuable.
6. Share
Publish a design observation, a UX lesson, a case-study insight, or a product critique. Let people see how you think.
7. Follow up
Reconnect where appropriate, check conversations, and keep track of relevant applications.
8. Review
Look at your applications, responses, interviews, conversations, and portfolio improvements. Learn from the results instead of simply collecting activity.
Your weekly checklist
- Apply to relevant roles.
- Improve one portfolio section.
- Have one meaningful conversation.
- Practise one interview question.
- Learn one UX concept.
- Share one useful design insight.
- Follow up where appropriate.
- Review what’s working.
The routine doesn’t need to be complicated. Make it manageable and repeat it consistently.
Don’t just search for the next opportunity. Build towards it.
