When people hear “UX,” they often think about apps, websites, screens, buttons, and digital interfaces.
But UX exists far beyond a screen.
Consider something incredibly ordinary:
A shopping cart.
You walk into a supermarket and start picking things up.
Milk.
Fruits.
Groceries.
Household products.
You could carry everything in your hands.
But you don’t.
You put everything into the cart and keep moving.
It feels so obvious that you probably never stop to think about it.
And that’s exactly what makes it good UX.
The design you don’t notice
A good shopping cart doesn’t simply carry products.
It helps you:
Carry → Organize → Move
All at once.
It removes work from the task without demanding your attention.
You don’t have to carry everything.
You don’t have to find somewhere to place each item.
You don’t have to make multiple trips.
You don’t have to constantly reorganize what you’re holding.
Instead:
Put it in. Keep moving.
That’s a carefully designed experience that feels completely natural.
Good UX removes friction
The best experiences often don’t feel like “design.”
They simply make the task:
Easier. Faster. More natural.
And that’s an important way to think about UX.
Good UX isn’t always about adding features, screens, or interactions.
Sometimes, it’s about removing unnecessary work.
UX is everywhere
As UX designers, it’s easy to look for UX only in apps, websites, and screens.
But UX is everywhere.
A shopping cart.
A door handle.
An elevator button.
A queue.
A ticket machine.
Anything designed around human behaviour can have UX.
The interesting part is that you probably interact with dozens of these experiences every day without consciously noticing them.
And that’s often a sign of good design.
It gets out of your way.
The next time someone asks, “What exactly is UX?”, you don’t necessarily need to show them an app.
Point to something they use every day.
They may already be experiencing UX without noticing it.
